Home Repairs for Long-Time Islandview Residents

For years our long-time residents have been given empty promises and have yet to see any substantial change. It's time we take matters into our own hands and help our own community.

We are amidst a health and safety crisis. We have senior citizens, some of whom are also veterans, that struggle through cold winters relying on space heaters and ovens to heat their homes. We have families without proper roofing, water damage, and weak foundations. We have kids who play around sinkholes in our streets and empty, dilapidated houses that have yet to be cleared.

Many families in our neighborhood are low-income and use their money to feed themselves and pay their bills. Also, the cost of heating these old homes with damaged roofs results in obscenely high energy bills that many of our neighbors just cannot afford.

We envision a safer, healthier, and more sustainable way of living for all of our long-time Islandview residents. We are asking for your help to repair and heat our homes and keep our neighbors safe and intact so that we can build a stronger foundation for our future generations. We don't just want our kids to grow up in this neighborhood; we want them to thrive.

How we will build our community in a sustainable way:

  • Prioritize our senior citizens and major home repairs like roof damage, heating, and foundation, as well as heating and electrical appliances that are much needed during our cold winters.

  • Use accredited Detroit and Black-owned contractors and construction companies for these home repairs.

  • Create a community that looks out for each other and work with surrounding neighborhoods to create awareness and communication pieces around this widespread issue of Home Repairs in the city of Detroit.

  • Set up an easy system for neighbors to submit home repair needs through a website/app/hotline on their phones.

Objectives

  • Raise immediate funds and prioritize senior citizens and major home repairs.

  • Call on City of Detroit to move funds from destroying our communities through gentrification abatement to investing in longtime residents

  • Call out DTE’s shutoff policies

  • Uplift energy affordability & home repairs as an urgent need
